1978 Toyota Celica GT

When was the last time you saw one of these in this type of condition?

This is the second generation Celica. It was designed by David John Stollery III, an American designer. Before studying design at the Art Center College of Design, he had been a child actor who appeared in a number of Disney movies and TV shows.

The Celica came with Toyota's 2.2 liter SOHC "20R" engine. It's a good, durable engine, but not especially powerful, putting out just 95 HP.

This is a typical Craigslist ad; short on details and pictures. The seller says it has just 47,000 miles on it. It looks like it's completely stock (yes!) and in very nice shape.

Located in Brunswick, GA, click here to see the Craigslist ad.

I never connected with this design in its' day. I felt as if it had no surprises, no real interest. Recently I saw a notch-back version of this Celica- and I have to say, it's one of the cleanest cars of the 70's. It's refined, light looking and almost timeless. Plus, remember when there used to be TWO versions of almost every coupe- trunk or liftback? Man- in today's world of almost all 4-door sedans and SUVS, cars like this Celica really stand out.
