The seller says "only 2 cars were authorized by BMW to be custom modified to pick up version." Problem is, there is no documentation of this being "authorized by BMW." Back in 2009, the (very cool) site German Cars For Sale Blog featured it. They were in the dark about it, too. However, two years later, one of their readers posted this in the comments section...
"This car was not a offical BMW Car. The car is build in 1984 by AT Autotechnik+ Design – a Tuning Shop in Heidelberg/Germany. The Idea was to show what is possible. AT was a Shop of BMW Dealer Auto Kocher Heidelberg. The new Car never had BMW Signs. The offical Name for it was AT 323 Pickup. there wher build 3 Cars , 2 for AT and one for BMW Glöckler in Frankfurt"That makes more sense.
Besides it being a 3 Series pick up, the first thing that stands out is the paint job. It should be against the law to put graphics like that on a BMW. (Or, for that matter, on any car that doesn't have the words "Hyundai Excel" on it and a 17 year old behind the wheel.) It's awful.
Once you get past the graphics - if you can get past the graphics - it looks like the conversion was well done. Because the E30 has a perfectly vertical B-pillar, it doesn't have the clean lines of an El Camino, Ranchero or even a Subaru BRAT. It looks more like the old VW Caddy (Rabbit pick up).
If the seller is to be believed, this thing has some pretty impressive Hartage pieces in it. I don't know what the body modifications did to the car's weight and balance, but if those pieces were in a standard E30, it would be a blast to drive.
The seller was looking for $25,000.00 back in 2009. By the time I wrote about it in 2011, the price had dropped to $18,000.00. It's now down to $17,000.00.
For $17,000.00 you can buy any number of cool, entertaining old BMWs. But, if you're looking for something unique, something that will attract attention wherever you drive it, this BMW pick up truck might be the way to go. Just do us all a favor and have it repainted before taking it out on the street.
