1980 Lada Niva - In US & On eBay

This must be the week for Eastern European 4X4s. First the ARO, now this.

The Lada Niva is a small SUV built in Russia by AutoVAZ. In stock form, the Niva came with either a 1.6 or 1.7 SOHC engine. The suspension was advanced for an SUV designed in the 70s, with coil springs at all 4 corners. With almost 10" of ground clearance, fulltime AWD and a locking center differential, the Niva was a formidable off road vehicle.

Nivas are not pretty vehicles, but with its small size and car like looks, it could be considered one of the first crossover vehicles.

Russian vehicles have a reputation for being tough, but rust prone. The Niva is no different and that's what makes the Niva on eBay desirable.

The Niva being offered on eBay is in incredible condition. The amount of work the seller put into restoring this vehicle is amazing. The body is in very good condition and the details and upgrades on this Niva are useful and extremely impressive. As I've said in earlier posts, I admire people who put the time and effort into restoring a vehicle that most people would ignore. I admire the hell out of this guy.

Lada exported the Niva to many countries, including Canada, but never to the US. In Canada it gained a small, but fanatical, following. I assume this vehicle is originally from Canada. Being over 25 years old, registering it in the US is not a problem. Some parts are still available in Canada and most anything else can be found in Europe.

The eBay listing has all the pertinent info and a ton of high quality pictures. The seller alludes to the fact that he's asking a lot of money for this Niva. That will likely scare away the casual buyer and that's probably a good thing. This vehicle belongs in the hands of a Niva fan. It's worth the money.

Take this Niva to your local off road event. Watch the people with Cherokees, Pathfinders, CJs, etc., snicker. Then watch their jaws drop as your little Niva does everything their big 4x4s do and more.

This is just a cool, unique vehicle.
