Trick or Treat? Corvair Fitch Sprint? No idea...

A Saturday afternoon post...

I just found this car and found the ad to be so bizarre that I had to post it right away...

The title of this Craigslist listing says this is a 1969 Corvair "Spirit". To the best of my knowledge, there is no such thing as a Corvair "Spirit", so that made me look at the ad. It got more bizarre when ad opened up.

In the ad, the seller calls this car a "1969 Chevy Corvair Spider". "Spyder" was the name Chevy used for the turbocharged version of the Corvair built from 1963-1964. There is no such thing as a 1969 Spider. From 1965 - 1966 the turbo Corvair was called the Corsa. The turbo engine was discontinued completely after 1966.

The pictures show a car that looks like it's a Corvair Fitch Sprint. It certainly has what looks to be a "Ventop" roof, which was a trademark of the Fitch Sprint. (I'm not aware of any company that made an aftermarket roof that looked like that) Now that's interesting. The Fitch Sprint was a Corvair modified by John Fitch. It's a rare and desirable car. To the best of my knowledge, John Fitch didn't make any 1969 Sprints, though. 1965 - 1969 Corvair bodies look alike, but an easy way to tell a 1968 or 1969 model is by the federally mandated side marker lights. This car appears to have those lights.

I mentioned in an earlier post that John Fitch is one of my (many) automotive idols. I also used to own a few Corvairs. Over the years I've done a lot of reading on Corvairs, the Fitch Sprint and John Fitch. I have never run across a mention of a 1969 Fitch Sprint.

From the way the Craigslist ad is written, it's pretty obvious the seller has no real idea what he has. I have no real idea what he has. This car is a mystery. I really wish it was closer to me. I'd love to check it out.

If anyone has any info about this car, please let me know.

Maybe a Solar Cavalier?

Didn't the Solar have rectangular tail lights?

I could be wrong about that. That's from memory...
