The Jeep Comanche was essentially a pick up truck version of the Jeep Cherokee. Jeep started producing them in 1986. Everything from the dashboard forward was pure Cherokee. The cab, the bed and the rear suspension were unique to the Comanche. In 1992 Jeep discontinued the Comanche.
In 1997 Jeep updated the basic look of the Cherokee. It received a modern dashboard, new tail lights and a slightly rounder front end.
What the owner of this Comanche did was take all the upgrades done to the 1997 Cherokee and apply them to a 1988 Comanche. The engine, transmission, wires, seats, windows, mirrors, front and rear bumper, hood, interior, dashboard, carpet, steering wheel and more come from a 1997 Cherokee. He created a 1997 Jeep Comanche. Not a 1988 with 1997 parts, but a 1997 Comanche... The California DMV, after inspecting the vehicle, decided that the title was going to come out as a 1997 Jeep Comanche.

The perfect truck. Never understood why Chrysler didn't keep the Comanche going, perfect Ranger competitor and Ford have been selling bucket loads of them for years. Hats off to the guy, he is one talented man!
Awesome.
Wow.
Could this be titled as a 1997 in any other state?
Great question, Jon. I don't know.
I guess if you're planning on buying it and don't live in CA, you should check with your local DMV.
Dave
Chrysler canceled the Comanche, because they thought it would have detracted from the Dodge Dakota's sells.
Chrysler needs to bring back the Comanche, I know everyone says their not going to because they already have the Dakota and Ram on the Dodge side, but comon! GM didn't discontinue their GMC trucks because they have the Silverado and Colorado on their Chevy side!
I think it would make many many MANY people happy, to Brig back the Comanche as a 6-cylinder or maybe even a 4-cylinder diesel, and bring back the Gladiator with a Normal V8, Hemi, and maybe an optional Turbo Charged Hemi?
