Jalopnik featured one of these back in 2006. I've never seen another one.

This is most likely a different vehicle from the one Jalopnik featured. The Jalopnik article was picked up by eMercedesBenz.com. According to them, the car being offered in 2006 was a 2000 MY with 16,000 miles on it.
I can find very little information about the history of these vehicles. I assume this was once a flower car for a funeral home, but there's no real reason it couldn't be used as a light duty pick-up.
You could buy a lot of nice old cars for $30,000.00. However, if you're in the market for something unique, but something you could drive everyday, this Mercedes Benz pick up truck would be hard to beat.

A huge thanks to my friend, Jon, for pointing this out to me! (Jon ended his e-mail with the sentence "Imagine the possibilities if it were a 4MATIC with just a tad of lift". I love the way he thinks.)

From my reading, Mercedes did create these in a limited number. I lived in Atlanta from 1997-2004 and remember being WOWed by these on the lot of Atlanta Classic Cars (Mercedes Dealership). I saw them on their lot and could swear there or four or more available. A rare car, indeed!
