1978 Mercedes-Benz 280 SLC

This is a really cool car, but I have a feeling this might be a tough sell to anyone other than a Mercedes-Benz aficionado.

This is a grey market 280 SLC. The SLC was, for all intents and purposes, a stretched, 4 passenger, hardtop version of the SL convertible.

The 280 SLC has a 2.8 liter straight 6 in it. We never officially saw this version in the US. Without the restrictive US emissions controls, the 6 put out around 182 HP. That's right around the same horsepower the 4.5 liter V8 created in the US spec 350 SLC and considerably more than the later (US Spec) 380 SLC produced. Being a European car it has the slim Euro bumpers, not the diving boards we got here.

What makes this car interesting - and what may make it a tough sell - is what it doesn't have. In the US, we think of Mercedes-Benz cars as being luxurious and having every imaginable bell and whistle. That's not how they always came in Europe. This car has manual windows, no air conditioning and cloth seats.

This car is in very nice condition. It was imported in 1985 and is fully legal. At some point the exterior was repainted (the original color) and the interior re-done. The seller says in 2010 the mechanicals were "renewed".

I don't know that I'd want a car without air conditioning as a daily driver (yeah, I'm becoming a wimp), but this would be a great car for Spring, Fall, and cool summer evenings drives.

Located in the Castro - Upper Market area of San Francisco, click here to see the Craigslist ad.

Wonderful color, but the rest really sucks, especially the material they used for the upholstery. No a/c and manual windows don't help either.
The 107 Coupes are somewhat unloved anyway. IMHO it's worth 2k
on a good day.

That straight six was one of Mercedes not-so-good engines. They often develop a ticking sound back by the passenger firewall that turns out to be a valve lifter. (they can starve for oil back there if the sump level gets low)The coupes are a fairly heavy car as well, so your gas mileage will not be a lot better than the V8. The longer wheel base actually makes them handle a little better than the roadsters. (go figure) but no A/c and cloth seats has to be a deal breaker.

A SBC would perk this Avacado number up considerably.

I could go for the manual windows, I could go for the no a/c *IF* the car had a clutch.

Agree with Anon #4 (if indeed it is actually 4 separate people - get an account, people, it doesn't hurt!). A stick would make this much more interesting....
