1989 Panther Solo 2

This is not your typical Just a Car Geek car, but I have to post it.

I remember seeing a picture of one of these some time in the late 1980s and being completely blown away by it. I wanted one in the worst way.

Panther had been around since 1972. They sold the retro looking Kallista in North America. When the Solo 2 was introduced in 1987 there was talk about it being sold in the US. That never happened. Between 1988 and 1989, Panther only managed to sell somewhere between 12 and 30 cars in total, most of them in the UK.

The Solo 2 was a mid engine / AWD car. The engine was 2.0 liter turbocharged Ford Sierra I4. It made around 200 HP, which got the car to 60 MPH in 6 seconds or so.

The body was a true monocoque, composed mainly of aluminum and carbon fiber. Credit to the body design is given to Martin Freestone, Keith Hunter and Bill Davies, with March Engineering working on the car's aerodynamics.

I absolutely love the looks of this car. As long time readers know, I'm a huge fan of wedges. The Solo has a short nose and long rear deck, which gives is a very cool, unique look.

I can't recall having seen another one of these for sale, and I'm surprised by the price of this one. The seller is asking £15,450, which is approximately $24,500.00. I would think a car this unique looking and this rare would go for more.

Here in the US it really doesn't matter how much it's selling for as it would be almost impossible to get it into the country legally. (Although rumor has it that there is one in the US, somewhere on the West Coast.) However, in 2 years this will be a legal car.

A big thanks to William for sending me the link to this car!
