1986 Lands Precedent Sportswagon - Thankfully Just 1 of 2

This was most likely a brilliant idea back in 1983. A luxury minivan / station wagon. Japanese companies were building minivan / station wagon hybrids, but they were relatively inexpensive and not very luxurious. There was a lot of money floating around in the 1980s. This could have been the mini van / station wagon for those who had "made it."

There's one big problem here, however. This thing is ugly. At certain angles it looks decent. The rear has a nice, clean modern look to it. Looked at straight on, the nose looks generic, but OK. The doors - Citroen sourced - look nice. Somehow though, it doesn't work. Maybe it's the huge C Pillars, maybe it's the huge rear window. Maybe it's the overall proportion. Whatever the reason, it's ugly.

It didn't have to be ugly. In the 1980s, you could pretty much dial any random phone number in Italy and find a person who could design a beautiful car. It's one of the things the Italians do very, very well. You would think that the folks at Lands Motor Company - the creator / builder of this thing - would have thought, "OK, we have our concept. We know what we want. We've just spent a sh*tload of money. Let's spend a little more and have a carozzeria clean it up and tweak the design a bit. Let's make it beautiful." That obliviously didn't happen. (A website called says it was designed by Alain Clenet, who also designed and built the ghastly Clenet retro-car. I don't find that hard to believe at all.)

The interior has the same problem. All the right pieces are there. It has all the right accessories. (And some wrong ones, too. An "electric wet bar?!!?") It has real wood accents scattered throughout it. But it's all not well placed or well designed. The instrument panel would look more appropriate on a boat. (A cheap, homemade boat.)

There is not much information available on the internet about this vehicle. There was a brief discussion about it in November, 2011, on Jalopnik featured it in September, 2005.

This is one of those cars that I'm pointing out just because it exists and for no other reason.

Back in 2007 someone (I'm not sure if it has changed hands in the past 5 years) was asking $35,000.00 for this vehicle. It's now being offered on eBay with no reserve.
